Pete started the Yateley Silverbacks to play basketball with his friends, now he is inspiring so many young people in Hampshire 🏀
Sport often has a way of bringing people together and for this Yateley Teacher basketball has helped him inspire a whole community. Pete Daines, Basketball Coach at Yateley Manor School set up his club the Yateley Silverbacks in 2015.
“I said to the school if they got the baskets fitted, I'd set up a club and I thought within a few years the court hiring out would give the school back the money so I set it up”
“Over the eight years it's built every single year pretty much, that, single-handedly is down to Pete's drive and enthusiasm for the game and the people that play it. This year we're running 4 adult teams, 3 men's teams and a Ladies team and we've got five age group teams. We've got something called Diddy Dunkers which is for very small children from three to get them started with coordination and handling a ball.”
Pete thrives from mentoring the next generation… “Mr Daines will always give us some tips on how we can improve.”
“I think as he gets old that he realises he's not going to be able to fill some of his own ambitions so the other opportunity is to pass that on; he's a teacher, he's a mentor, he’s a coach by nature, you know, in his life as well as in his sport so he wants to kind of pass that information on.”
Pete has made sure that the Yateley Silverbacks is a club that includes something for everyone
“Mr Daines has been brilliant about integrating the boys and the girls so you know in every single team that he puts out in the league there'll always be a mixture and to be honest, I don't think there are many teams that we've encountered in the league that have girls. They look up to him because of the successes that he has had.”
Pete recently won a Local Heroes Award presented by Surrey and Hampshire’s local radio station Eagle Radio for all his hard work starting the club and mentoring the next generation. The above documentary was made my Greer Riddell for Eagle Radio to celebrate Pete’s achievements.
